Block Time Wasting Websites in Chrome with StayFocused

Internet is a necessary evil in offices. Though it provides a never-ending stream of knowledge that may help in your daily office work, it comes with some mind distracting web services that may waste our time if we don’t have enough self control.

I have seen people turning on their computer to work, but they often waste their time by checking their Facebook updates, reading forearmed email chains, replying Twitter mentions, etc. wasting both time and resources.

Though there are ways, you can block these websites once and for all, but I don’t feel that’s a good option. According to me, these websites are fine to browse as long as there is a time restrain.

StayFocused is a simple extension for Google Chrome that helps you stay focused on work by restricting the amount of time you can spend on time-wasting websites. Once the allotted time is used up, the blocked websites will be inaccessible for next 24 hours.

Once you download and install the extension you will see a round blue icon of StayFocused in your extension area. Before we start limiting any website, it’s very important we configure all the settings. Right click on the extension icon and click on options.

In the StayFocused configuration page make all the necessary changes like Maximum Time Allowed per Day, Active days and hours, Challenge to bypass, Reset time, etc. To add sites to the block list, click on Blocked Sites in the option page and add site(s) to block in the text box below and then click “Add Blocked Site(s)”.

You can also click on the extension button while you are on any page to add it to the block list. The extension is highly configurable. Not only you can block a website; you can block specific path, sub domain or even a containing flash content. Just click on the advance options when you need to block advance web pages.

Once the timer expires, and you have had your daily does of time wasting websites, StayFocused will block all your web pages for next 24 hours so that you can concentrate on work. It will also remind you at regular intervals the time you are left with to browse through the restricted websites.

Note: There are ways you can bypass StayFocused like installing a different browser altogether, uninstalling the plugin, etc., but before you do so, just remember, time is money and if you are wasting it, you are loosing your asset and no one but you will be held responsible for it.

StayFocused is an amazing plugin to help us concentrate on our work. The plugin will simply remind you about your work, doing it or not is completely your call.
